Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Experts propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have come off the medication report a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you become starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
