A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant growth of its duties in national projects. They were completed at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked persistent apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate pause in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
